3. Itinerary:

DAY 1: May 28 (Friday)

Meals: Dinner

This is the Vesak Day long weekend, which means that we have to meet early at 6.00 am at the Esso Station at Gelang Patah on the Malaysian side of the 2nd Link.

We will be travelling on a combination of highways and country roads with stops for lunch, toilet breaks and petrol top-ups. As always, we will driving in a convoy throughout the journey.

I hope to reach the seaside town of Kuala Dungun by 4 pm or earlier, which will give everyone enough time to enjoy the beach and other facilities. For golfers, you will probably have time for a quick round of nine holes on the links course next door.

We will have a group dinner at the hotel.

DAY 2: May 29 (Saturday)

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner

After breakfast, we will all gather at the lobby for the boat trip to nearby Tenggol island. We will do snorkeling at a coral reef site just off the island, which sits in the middle of a marine park. As the marine park is a protected sanctuary, you will be able to see lots of fish and other marine life. including the occasional turtle. Life jackets and snorkeling gear will be provided for all. In any case, do bring along your underwater camera and swimming goggles if you prefer.

After snorkeling, we’ll come ashore on the island where you can have your own little picnic. Packed lunch and bottled water will be provided. For your info, the water sports centre on the island has single and double-seater canoes for hire.

There is also a Dive Centre which rents out diving gear. You may also bring your own equipment if you wish. During May and June, whale sharks, the gentle giants of the sea, would gather around Tenggol island as part of their migratory route. The Dive Centre does trips to see these whale sharks.
We should be back at the hotel by 4.00 pm. In the evening, we’ll have group dinner at a nice little family-owned restaurant in Kuala Dungun.

DAY 3: May 30 (Sunday)

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, we meet at the lobby at 9 am for the trip north to the state capital of Kuala Terengganu (KT). The journey is about 90 minutes from Dungun. In KT, we’ll visit the famous ‘Pasar Payang’. This is the town’s main market square where you’ll be able to buy the best keropok, snacks and dried seafood in Terengganu. There are also shops selling souvenirs, textile, tee-shirts, batik clothing, etc..

We’ll have lunch at the Batu Burok food centre on our way back to Dungun. We should be back at the hotel before 3 pm. It’s free & easy for the rest of the day.

For golfers, the links course is just across the road.

Those keen on the squid-catching and fishing trip will meet at the lobby at 3.30pm. We’ll drive to the town of Marang where the boat is based. By 5 pm, we’ll be out at sea. We will be fishing in a typical M’sian trawler boat, which, as per regulations, can only take in maximum 8 passengers. Places on the boat will therefore be on a first-come-first-served basis. Please let me know early if you are keen on this optional trip.

As May and June is the squid season, you can expect to catch squids the size of your arm.
We’ll return to shore at around midnight. From Marang jetty, we should be back at our Dungun hotel by 2 am.

DAY 4: May 31 (Monday)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

After breakfast, it’s free & easy. The anglers and sotong-catchers will probably want to sleep till late morning. Meanwhile, I will organize a trip to the nearby Kuala Dungun wet market at 8.30 am for those who wish to buy super fresh fish, prawns and other seafood. The prices of seafood here are a lot cheaper anytime compared to our markets in Singapore. Do bring along your ice boxes or you can always buy the styrofoam boxes for RM10 each at the market. Don’t worry about the ice, it’s cheaply available at the market.

We will check out of the hotel by 11 am for the journey home. Along the way, we’ll make a stopover for kopi-o or tea at the famous Hai Peng Kopitiam in the town of Chukai, followed by lunch at Tong Juan restaurant where the signature dish is the legendary ‘Baked Stuffed Crab’.

We should reach Singapore 2nd Link by about 8 pm.

We get off the highway at the Sg Petani exit, which is about 20 minutes north of Penang.

We’ll spend a few hours in Dannork and Bukit Kayu Hitam. From here, it’s an hour’s drive back to Sg Petani where we’ll check into Swiss Inn again.

DAY 1: June 17 (Thursday)

Meal – Dinner

The June school holiday has already started. We meet at 6.30am on the Malaysian side of the 2nd Link at the Esso petrol station at Gelang Patah. Convoy will move off by 7.00 am.

We’ll have lunch along the way and there will also be stops for toilet breaks and petrol top-up. I plan to reach the resort by 4.00pm, hopefully earlier. This will give us plenty of time to laze by the pool or relax at the lobby lounge while you soak in some of the most breathtaking sight of the lake. The total area of this man-made lake and its tributary rivers is at least twice the size of Singapore! If you are lucky enough to get a lakeside chalet, you will also find the view simply spectacular.

We will have a group dinner at the resort on the first night where we will get to know each other better.

DAY 2: June 18 (Friday)

Meal – Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, we meet at the lobby at 9.15 am. We’ll drive over to the nearby jetty to board the boat for the lake cruise and trip to the Kelah fish sanctuary. The Kelah is a protected species at the lake. At some fish farms, the Kelah is retailed at more than RM200 per kg. (Yes, it’s RM200).

We’ll spend something like 4-5 hours at the lake where, apart from visiting the sanctuary, we’ll also go swimming in a tributary river, enjoy a picnic lunch and visit the herbal garden. If you have ever wondered how a Tongkat Ali tree looks like, the garden has several species of them.
We should be back at the jetty by 3 pm. It’s free and easy for the rest of the evening. Suggested activities include cycling around the sprawling resort grounds, indoor games, billiards, swimming at the resort pool, fishing, etc.

DAY 3: June 19 (Saturday)

Meals – Breakfast, Dinner

We’ll check-out by 9.45 am and convoy our way to Cameron Highlands. We’ll have lunch enroute to the mountain resort. The road to Cameron Highlands will be another scenic journey as we pass little kampongs, serene countryside, hills, majestic mountains and vast expanse of jungle greenery.

The route will take us into southern Kelantan and the district of Gua Musang. From Gua Musang, it’s an uphill journey towards Cameron Highlands.

I plan to reach Equatorial Hotel by 2.00pm, which will give everyone ample time to do their own thing such as walking over to the nearby Kea Farm to shop for souvenirs, fresh strawberries and other locally grown fruits, delicious snacks, veggies and other foodstuff..

In the evening, we’ll depart for Brinchang town where we’ll do some shopping and enjoy steamboat dinner over traditional charcoal fire. I don’t know how charcoal fire will enhance the taste of the food but some people swear that it does. So let’s all find out for ourselves. After dinner, we’ll walk over to the famous Brinchang Night Market. What can you buy at the night market? Food, fruits, clothing, souvenirs, potted ornamental plants, snacks, etc.

DAY 4: June 20 (Sunday)

Meals - Breakfast

After breakfast, we will gather at the lobby for the trip to the famous Boh Tea plantation and factory.

In the interest of everyone’s safety, we will NOT be driving to this plantation in our cars. I will charter buses for this purpose. The one-lane road to the plantation is winding and narrow, and is used by traffic going to and coming out from the plantation.

We should be back at the hotel by 12.00 noon. We’ll check out and depart for home by 12.30 pm. Lunch will be at one of the highway R&Rs.

There is also an ostrich race, pony rides, monkey show, baby crocodile, and ostrich satay to sample. There is a retail shop that sells products made from ostrich skin.

After checking-in at the resort, I think everyone would prefer to remain in their villas to enjoy the exclusive facilities, so it will be free & easy for the rest of the afternoon.

In the evening, we will proceed to a nearby seafood restaurant for dinner. Being a Saturday, there is a Night Market in Port Dickson town. Hawkers sell everything from local fruits, snacks, souvenirs, clothing, toys, etc. As the durian season is still in bloom in June, you will most probably be able to get these fruits at the Night Market.

Day 2: June 27 (Sunday)

Meals provided: Breakfast

After breakfast, it’s free & easy until we check-out at 12.00 noon. From Port Dickson, we’ll drive south to Melaka for shopping and lunch.

The city of Melaka needs no introduction. From a sleepy little town, it has become a bustling, congested shopping and eating haven. For convenience and security, we’ll park our cars at the Equatorial Hotel in Bandar Hilir.

Bandar Hilir is the ‘Orchard Road’ of Melaka. All the modern major shopping malls are there, together with the city’s Nonya restaurants and historical legacies.

Chinatown, where you can get delicious Peranakan cuisine, snacks and cookies, is only 10-15 minutes’ walk from Equatorial Hotel. Trishaws are aplenty and they are a better option than driving around looking for a parking lot.

We’ll spend a few hours in Melaka, after which we’ll continue our journey back home to Singapore. Let me know if you wish to stay one night in Melaka. I will help you with the hotel booking at Equatorial.

We should reach the 2nd Link by early evening.

STAR Automotive Centre presents …

4D3N Lake Kenyir & Cameron Highlands

13-16 March 2010 (Sat – Tues)

1. Accommodation:

Lake Kenyir Resort (2 nights) and Equatorial Hotel Cameron Highlands (1 night).

2. Highlights / Itinerary:

DAY 1: March 13 (Saturday) Meal – Dinner

This is the start of the week-long March school break. We meet at 6.00am on the Malaysian side of the 2nd Link at the Esso petrol station at Gelang Patah. Convoy will move off by 6.30am.

We have to set off early because the journey to Lake Kenyir in Terengganu is long but it’s also scenic, pleasant and interesting.

We’ll have lunch along the way and there will also be stops for toilet breaks and petrol top-up. I plan to reach the resort by 3.30pm which will give us plenty of time to laze by the pool or relax at the lobby lounge while you soak in some of the most breathtaking sight of the lake. This man-made wonder is at least twice the size of Singapore! If you are lucky enough to get a lakeside chalet, you will also find the view just as spectacular.

We will have a group dinner at the resort on the first night where we will get to know each other better.

DAY 2: March 14 (Sunday) Meal – Breakfast

This is a free & easy day for everyone to do their own thing, which can be anything from fishing, jungle walks and boat trips for island hopping to watersports, etc.

I can also organize a free driving tour of Kuala Terengganu (KT), the state capital, if there are enough people who want to visit the place. Please let me know if you are interested to visit KT.

What’s there to see or do in KT? Apart from local food products, batik textile, handicrafts and souvenir shops, there are also museums, restaurants selling ‘Nasi Dagang’ (the local cuisine), and other attractions. We will visit the iconic ‘Pasar Payar’ which sells excellent keropok, fresh local fruits, clothes, etc. We should be back in the resort by 4pm, in time for everyone to enjoy the resort’s facilities.

DAY 3: March 15 (Monday) Meals – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We’ll check-out by 11.00 am and convoy our way to Cameron Highlands. We’ll have group lunch along the way. The road to Cameron Highlands will be another long and scenic journey as we pass little kampongs, serene countryside, hills, majestic mountains and vast expanse of jungle greenery.

The route will take us into southern Kelantan and the town of Gua Musang. From Gua Musang, it’s an uphill mountain road towards Cameron Highlands.

I plan to reach Equatorial Hotel by 2.30pm, in time for us to visit the Boh Tea plantation. In the interest of everyone’s safety, we will NOT be driving to this plantation. I will charter buses for this purpose. The road to the plantation is winding and narrow, and is used by traffic going to and coming out from the plantation.

In the evening, we will have steamboat dinner in the town of Brinchang where the pasar malam is located. Brinchang town is a short 10 minutes’ drive from the hotel. What can you buy at the night market? Food, fruits, clothing, souvenirs, potted plants, etc.

DAY 4: March 16 (Tuesday) Meals - Breakfast

After breakfast, we will check out by 11 am for the journey home. We should reach the 2nd Link by 7pm.

6. Walkie-talkies

I have received a number of enquiries on the use of walkie-talkie. If you have your own set which you are comfortable with, by all means bring it along. I will tell you the channels to set.

Some have asked me if I charged $30 per walkie-talkie with a $50 deposit. Guys, rest assured I’m not that mercenary! Every car will be issued with a walkie, except those who prefer to use their own set. I only require that you handle it with care and return it to me in its original working condition.

We will be travelling on a combination of highways and country roads with stops for lunch, toilet breaks and petrol top-ups. As always, we will driving in a convoy throughout the journey.

I hope to reach Ulek Beach Resort by 4 pm or earlier, which will give everyone enough time to enjoy the beach, pool and other facilities. On the way to the resort, I will make a quick stop to buy fresh fish, yes, fresh fish from the roadside stalls. It will be a unique experience for everyone.

After breakfast, we will all gather at the lobby for the boat trip to nearby Tenggol island. We will do snorkeling at a coral reef site near the island, which sits in the middle of a marine park. In any case, do bring along your underwater camera and swimming goggles if you prefer.

We will spend about an hour snorkeling, after which we’ll come ashore on the island where you can have your own little picnic. Packed lunch and bottled water will be provided. For your info, the water sports centre on the island has single and double-seater canoes for hire.

DAY 3: March 20 (Saturday)

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, it’s free & easy time. I will organize a trip to the nearby Kuala Dungun wet market at 8 am for those who wish to buy super fresh fish and prawns. Don’t worry about the ice, it’s cheaply available at the market.

We will check out of the resort by 11 am for the journey home. Along the way, we’ll make a stopover for lunch in the town of Chukai.
